Medicaid is a program funded by federal and state governments, which ensures people of all ages who meet certain income levels have access to healthcare resources. Medicaid varies by state and also covers services not typically paid for by Medicare, like nursing home care, some assisted living, adult day services, home modifications, in-home care, and personal care services.

Medicare is a federal health insurance program which covers people over the age of 65 and younger individuals with qualifying disabilities. While these plans are complex, it should be noted that the benefits of non-medical in-home care are being recognized, and government payer sources are working to ensure access and payment so these services are available to those who need it.
- Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)
Covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.
- Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)
Covers certain doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
- Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans)
Private companies contract with Medicare to provide Part A and Part B benefits. Medical services are covered under Medicare Advantage Plans, rather than through Original Medicare, and typically offer prescription drug coverage.
- Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)
- Through Part D, approved private insurance companies provide prescription drug coverage under Original Medicare.
- Medicare Supplemental Insurance (Medigap)
Sold by private companies, Medigap may help pay some of the health care costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.
